How to Buy a Domain Name

Getting started

One of the first things you to learn to do when creating a website, is how to buy a domain name. If you’re into internet marketing, then the domain name is really important, so that you can obtain more keywords from the domain name or start your way towards your own brand.

The first thing you need to do is to see if the website domain name that you want is available. Most domain name companies such as Namecheap or Godaddy, allow you to search for domain names right from their sites, so that you can purchase the domains then and there.

Considerations

There are several things that you need to consider before purchasing a domain:

  • Is the .com or .org available?

Especially for an internet marketer, these are the preferred domains. At a pinch you can use .net domains.

  • Is the domain keyword rich?

Www.aquaticswimming.com is much better for an aquatic swimming website than www.aqswim.com.

  • Is the domain name legible and polite?

Sometimes when you put all the words together into one long lie it just looks wrong! Www.winnewwork.com or the classic www.expertsexchange.com (expert sex change….unsurprisingly they changed it to www.experts-exchange.com) either don’t flow right or spell out the wrong name.

  • Can you say the domain name in one breath?

Nobody wants to try and say, let alone type, something like www.evangelicalchoirclothesforsaleinillinois.com so keep it as short and sweet as you can.

Costs

Generally for a .com its about $10 a year but shopping around can lead to some savings. Try not to get tempted by a .net or similar domain as they seem to just not rank as well, though if you have a particular purpose where it doesn’t need to rank so well, they are much cheaper, maybe only $2 a year.

After you have bought your domain, the only thing you really need to do is to check out where in the settings the DNS Nameserver details go, as you will need this when you have obtained your hosting.

So there you go, learning how to buy a domain name isnt hard, and as you buy more domains, it will get easier.
